Smart Glasses Privacy Concerns: Meta Sees Nudity & Payment Data

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Meta Platforms is facing renewed scrutiny over user privacy following reports that its smart glasses, developed in partnership with Ray-Ban, are capable of capturing sensitive data including images of nudity and financial information. The concerns, initially reported by Czech news outlet Svet hardware, center on the glasses’ ability to record video and audio without explicit user consent, raising questions about potential misuse and data security.

The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses allow wearers to capture photos and videos, livestream content, and listen to music. Although, the technology’s capabilities extend beyond these advertised features. According to the report, the glasses can record what the wearer sees, potentially including private moments and confidential information visible in the environment. This functionality, combined with the glasses’ ability to process voice commands, raises concerns about the unintentional collection of sensitive data.

Meta has a long history of privacy-related issues. The company, formerly known as Facebook, has faced numerous investigations and fines related to data handling practices. In 2023, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) issued a record-breaking €1.2 billion fine to Meta for transferring personal data to the U.S. In violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The EDPB determined that Meta’s transfers, based on standard contractual clauses (SCCs), did not adequately protect user data from potential access by U.S. Intelligence agencies. The fine underscored the seriousness of Meta’s infringement, citing the systematic, repetitive, and continuous nature of the data transfers and the massive volume of personal data involved.

Previous privacy concerns have included the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, where data from millions of Facebook users was harvested without their consent for political advertising purposes. Meta has also been the subject of criticism regarding its content management policies and censorship practices. A 2021 leak of company files further fueled these concerns, revealing internal discussions about the potential for negative impacts on user well-being.

In January 2026, Meta denied a reported data breach affecting 17.5 million Instagram users, attributing claims of stolen usernames, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses to an external entity sending fraudulent password reset requests. Instagram stated the issue was resolved and urged users to ignore suspicious emails. However, the incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of user data to potential breaches and the challenges of maintaining data security in the face of evolving cyber threats.

Meta’s Transparency Center addresses privacy violations, but the extent to which these policies are enforced and effective remains a subject of debate. The company has faced criticism for its handling of user data and its response to privacy concerns. The latest reports regarding the smart glasses are likely to intensify this scrutiny and could lead to further investigations by regulatory bodies.

As of March 22, 2026, Meta has not issued a public statement directly addressing the specific concerns raised about the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and their data collection capabilities. The Irish Data Protection Authority, which serves as the lead supervisory authority for Meta in Europe, has not announced any investigations related to the glasses.
