Both Caltrans and the CHP originally said the issue was caused by a spill of wet cement, when, in fact, it was sludge — Ed.

A sludge spill on northbound Interstate 15 in the Grantville area blocked lanes and caused detours throughout the day on Wednesday.

Caltrans said around 8:45 a.m., two lanes of northbound I-15 at Friars Road were closed due to the wet after a tractor trailer transporting sludge dredged from the ocean spilled its load. The Friars Road off-ramp was also closed. Later in the afternoon, crews were still working to clear the road, with traffic affected through 5 p.m.

Drivers were warned to expect significant delays while crews cleaned up the area. No estimated time for reopening was provided, but officials said it would take a while.

No injuries were reported.
