Slovenia Elections 2026: Golob vs Janša in Tight Race Amid Spy Scandal

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Polling stations opened across Slovenia on Sunday for a closely watched parliamentary election, pitting incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob against right-wing challenger Janez Janša. The vote is poised to determine whether the nation continues on a centre-left trajectory or shifts towards a more conservative direction.

The contest centers on two primary forces: Golob’s Freedom Movement and Janša’s Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS). Janša, a veteran politician, previously served as prime minister on three occasions and is known for his alignment with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and past expressions of admiration for former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Recent polling data indicates a tightening race, though analysts suggest neither party is likely to secure an outright majority in the 90-member parliament. This scenario would elevate the role of smaller parties as potential kingmakers in forming a governing coalition. “The outcome is completely uncertain, which is nothing unusual for Slovenia as the electorate has always been polarized,” noted Slovenian sociologist Samo Uhan.

The election has been overshadowed by allegations of foreign interference and a political scandal that surfaced in the days leading up to the vote. Golob has accused unnamed “foreign services” of attempting to influence the election, following reports that officials from the Israeli private intelligence firm Black Cube visited Slovenia in December and engaged with the opposition.

A Slovenian rights group, working with an investigative journalist and two researchers, publicly claimed that Black Cube was responsible for the release of videos alleging corruption and linked the firm to Janša’s SDS. The videos reportedly depict conversations among an influential lobbyist, a lawyer, a former minister and a manager, discussing potential methods for influencing Golob’s centre-left coalition government to expedite procedures or secure contracts.

Janša’s SDS has denied any connection to Black Cube, issuing a statement that condemned the allegations as a smear campaign. The party simultaneously criticized what it described as “unprecedented corruption of the leftist elite” revealed by the leaked videos.

The allegations surrounding Black Cube and the leaked recordings have injected a high degree of uncertainty into the final days of the campaign, potentially influencing voter sentiment. The outcome of the election remains unpredictable, with the possibility of protracted coalition negotiations following Sunday’s vote.
