Slovakia: A Nation Leaning Left Economically, yet rooted in tradition, New Survey Reveals
Bratislava, Slovakia – A new nationwide survey reveals a complex picture of Slovakian values, showing a population largely favoring state intervention in the economy while simultaneously holding conservative views on social adn cultural issues. The findings, released today by NMS Market Research Slovakia in partnership with daily SME, offer a detailed look at the nation’s political compass as it navigates a rapidly changing world.
The survey, conducted July 2-7, 2025, with a representative sample of 1,009 Slovakian adults, indicates a strong leaning towards left-wing economic policies. A majority of respondents expressed a desire for the state to play an active role in economic policy, prioritizing the development of a robust social safety net and a reduction in income inequality. However, opinions are more divided when it comes to taxation, with roughly half of citizens unsure whether increased taxes are justified in exchange for improved public services, or if lower taxes – even with service reductions - are preferable.
despite this leftward economic inclination, conventional values remain deeply ingrained in Slovakian society. The survey found meaningful opposition to same-sex marriage and widespread support for stricter immigration controls.Attitudes towards european integration are more nuanced, with 40% of respondents positioned between advocating for deeper EU cooperation and believing the Union has overstepped its boundaries.A similar divide exists regarding the balance between environmental protection and economic growth.
Five Distinct Segments Emerge
NMS Market Research Slovakia identified five key segments within the Slovakian population:
* Traditionalist Left (44%): The largest group, characterized by a desire for a strong state coupled with conservative social values. This segment is predominantly comprised of older citizens residing outside of Bratislava.
* Liberal Left (18%): Supportive of minority rights, the EU, and environmental protection, while also advocating for significant state involvement in the economy.
* Traditionalist Right (8%): Conservative on cultural issues but resistant to higher taxes, even if it means reduced public services.
* Liberal Right (4%): Proponents of same-sex marriage and European integration, though less definitively positioned on environmental concerns.
* Center (17%): holding largely undefined views on many issues, with a slight tendency towards conservative values.
