Man’s Sleepwalking Episodes Take Unexpected Turns, Including Late-Night Bathroom Mishap
Amsterdam, Netherlands – Ivo, a 31-year-old man, recounts a history of sleepwalking that ranges from the mundane to the startling, including one incident where he unknowingly urinated in a drawer. His experiences, recently shared with LINDA. magazine, highlight the often-unpredictable nature of the sleep disorder and the potential for surprising consequences.
Ivo first experienced sleepwalking at age thirteen, exhibiting complex behaviors like brushing his teeth and showering while unconscious. His mother discovered him and guided him back to bed, with Ivo remaining unaware of his nocturnal activities until informed later. A more recent episode occurred during a backpacking trip in New Zealand, where he was observed by a hostel-mate preparing eggs in the kitchen while asleep. The witness, recognizing the situation, played along, and Ivo only learned of the incident the following day. “When I wake up, I don’t know anything about it at first. until someone tells me, then it comes up again,” Ivo explained.
While the frequency of full-blown sleepwalking episodes has decreased, Ivo remains active in his sleep. His former partner reported instances of muttering, and he occasionally experiences night terrors, waking up screaming after dreaming of falling. One especially memorable incident involved squeezing a drawer in his sleep after consuming alcohol, resulting in damage to his passport, which he has since relocated for safekeeping.
Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, is a parasomnia-an undesirable physical event or experience that occurs during sleep. It’s more common in children but can persist or develop in adulthood, often linked to factors like stress, sleep deprivation, and alcohol consumption.
