Skyway Bridge Closure: Suspicious Vehicle Investigation – Lanes Reopened

ST. PETE, ⁢Fla. (WWSB) – The ⁤Sunshine ⁣Skyway Bridge was temporarily closed⁢ Wednesday, September 24, due to ​a suspicious vehicle and subsequent law enforcement investigation.All lanes have since reopened.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s‌ Office deputies ⁣responded to the bridge at 9:48 a.m.after locating the vehicle. The sheriff’s bomb team was deployed to‍ examine a box found inside, ultimately determining the contents posed no⁢ threat.

During the⁣ investigation, both​ northbound and southbound lanes​ of I-275 over the bridge were closed for several hours. Southbound traffic was diverted at 54th Avenue South, and northbound drivers were detoured at⁢ the I-75/I-275 interchange.‍

Traffic resumed normal flow as of 12:35 p.m. Wednesday. The Skyway Bridge is a vital ‌transportation artery connecting St. Petersburg and‍ Sarasota, carrying approximately 50,000 vehicles daily.
