Six Kings Slam 2026 Postponed to December Due to Middle East Tensions

Six Kings Slam 2026 Postponed to December Due to Middle East Tensions

October 14, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Six Kings Slam 2026 tennis exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, originally scheduled for October 21 through 24, has been postponed by two months to December 27 through 30, sportmediaset.mediaset.it reported.

Organizers delayed the event following a recent escalation in the Middle East, specifically due to attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels that struck the international airport in the Saudi capital, according to a statement published on the X account of Riyadh Season. La Stampa noted that the strikes caused 13 deaths and hundreds of injuries during assaults on King Khalid International Airport, alongside explosions near Aramco in Dhahran and an Aramco refinery in Riyadh. Turki Alalshikh, president of the General Entertainment Authority, shared the communication regarding the new dates from 27 to 30 December on X. The tournament in Saudi Arabia was originally supposed to be played on October 21, 22 and 24, but the complicated geopolitical situation and Houthi airport attacks led to the decision, as reported on October 14 at 18:12 by a collaborator in Milan. The official announcement arrived following tensions and Houthi attacks at the Riyadh airport that caused multiple casualties, complicating the path toward the third edition of the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia. Riyadh Season, the organization promoting the event, communicated the new dates of December 27 to 30, 2026. This strategy by Saudi Arabia to host major sporting events in its territory has suffered setbacks due to the outbreak of the war between the United States and Iran in late February and, more recently, the conflict in Yemen pitting the Houthi movement supported by Iran against government forces backed by a military coalition led by Riyadh. New explosions shook the capital of the Saudi kingdom and an Aramco facility, signaling an escalation in the conflict between the pro-Iranian fighters and the Saudi-led military coalition supporting the Yemeni government. Following the violent assaults conducted last Saturday against the international airport causing 13 deaths and hundreds of injuries, bombardments have targeted the city center with violent detonations. The Yemeni armed forces carried out a high-level military operation against Aramco in Dhahran, in the Eastern Province, the King Khalid International Airport and the Aramco refinery in Riyadh, declared military spokesperson Yahya Saree, adding that in the coming days, operations will continue deep within Saudi territory, targeting enemy Saudi airports and oil facilities.

The tournament features a prize pool of six million dollars and includes top men’s circuit stars. The initial draw paired Alexander Zverev against Taylor Fritz, and Learner Tien against Alex de Minaur, with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic already positioned in the semifinals. According to the official note, the choice stems from an evaluation of organizational and logistic difficulties and their potential impact on the quality of the audience experience, with the declared objective to guarantee a show up to expectations, respecting the highest standards in the organization of an international sporting event. The tournament brings together six stars of the circuit: Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, Serb Novak Djokovic, German Alexander Zverev, Americans Taylor Fritz and Learner Tien, and Australian Alex de Minaur.

Uncertainty surrounds the participant lineup for the rescheduled December dates, occurring at a time when the competitive season will have concluded and players typically focus on preparations for the following year. La Gazzetta dello Sport pointed out that Jannik Sinner, winner of the first two editions of the event, was already absent from the tournament field after announcing the conclusion of his 2026 season due to a knee problem and a planned return in 2027 for the Australian Open. It is unclear if the new December window will alter player availability as the tennis calendar adjusts to the regional security situation. Sinner had revealed the previous week that he concluded his season due to a knee problem and announced a return in 2027 to best prepare for the Australian Open, though the new calendar placement could prove useful in the recovery process of the South Tyrolean player, while the postponement does not erase unknowns regarding the presence of big names as players focus on preparing for the new season and early tournaments in Australia ahead of the Australian Open scheduled for mid-January.
