great Plains Zoo Celebrates its Bears with a Special Enrichment Day
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Great Plains Zoo & Aquarium hosted a meaningful enrichment day for its six bears on January 19, 2026, providing them with a variety of stimulating activities and treats. The event aimed to enhance the bears’ physical and mental well-being, a core component of the zoo’s animal care program.
The bears – two grizzly bears, two black bears, and two sun bears – enjoyed a range of enrichment items. These included puzzle feeders filled with honey, frozen fruit pops, and new climbing structures. Zoo staff also scattered browse (branches and leaves) throughout the habitats, encouraging natural foraging behaviors. KELO-TV reported that the bears actively engaged with all the new additions.
“Enrichment is crucial for animals in managed care,” explained Dr. Emily Carter, the zoo’s Director of Animal Health.“it prevents boredom, reduces stress, and encourages them to exhibit natural behaviors. A stimulated bear is a happy and healthy bear.”
The grizzly bears, named Goldie and Bruno, notably enjoyed the large frozen fruit pops, while the smaller sun bears, Poppy and Finn, spent considerable time investigating the puzzle feeders. The black bears, Luna and shadow, showed interest in the climbing structures and browse.
the Great Plains Zoo & Aquarium is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a testament to its high standards of animal care and welfare. The AZA requires accredited zoos to provide extensive enrichment programs for all their animals.
Zoo officials stated that enrichment days are regularly scheduled for all animal residents, but the bear enrichment day was a particularly large-scale event. visitors to the zoo were able to observe the bears enjoying their enrichment items throughout the day. The zoo continues to prioritize innovative ways to improve the lives of the animals in its care.
