Sioux City Police Host Live Press Conference on Riverside Park Homicide

September 4, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

On Friday, September 4, 2026, the Sioux City Police Department detailed the capture of a murder suspect following the discovery of Shaunacie Peters’ body at Riverside Park. Authorities arrested 46-year-old Irosy Iotis of Sioux City, Iowa, in Wyoming on September 2 after tracking a vehicle via license plate reader technology.

Early Investigation Faced a Daunting Information Gap

The investigation began on Monday morning at approximately 6:45 a.m., when an officer on routine patrol found the victim’s body. Officials swiftly classified the incident as a homicide. Sioux City Police Chief Rex Mueller noted that the initial stages of the inquiry presented a daunting information gap.

“Thankfully, with cooperation from local agency, we were able to come up with a rough description of a possible suspect vehicle,” Mueller stated during the live press briefing, crediting local residents and businesses for assisting with identification.

Multi-Jurisdictional Interception Without Resistance

Once investigators secured a vehicle description, tracking systems played a critical part. Automated license plate readers allowed law enforcement to trace the automobile westward into Nebraska before intercepting it on Interstate 80 in Wyoming. Officials confirmed the driver surrendered without resistance during the traffic stop.

First-Degree Murder Charge and Extradition Proceedings

Iotis now faces a charge of first-degree murder. Court records cited place the suspect in the Laramie County Jail without bond. Detective Sergeant Nick Thompson characterized the inquiry as a classic “who done it case” defined by early dead ends before technology broke the trail.

Extradition proceedings are currently underway to return Iotis to Iowa.

Active Multi-Agency Operation Continues

Chief Mueller emphasized that the investigation remains active. The multi-jurisdictional operation involved the South Sioux City Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Laramie County Sheriff’s Department, and the Iowa Department of Investigation.
