Sinner Ties Djokovic Record at Miami Open: Advances to Round 3
Jannik Sinner defeated Damir Džumhur 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Miami Open on Saturday, simultaneously achieving a milestone by tying Novak Djokovic’s record for most consecutive sets won at the ATP Masters 1000 level with 24.
The victory, secured in one hour and ten minutes, marks a strong start to Sinner’s campaign as he pursues the ‘Sunshine Double’ following his recent triumph at Indian Wells. Sinner quickly established dominance against Džumhur, racing to a 3-0 lead in the opening set. Despite Džumhur’s attempts to vary his game with net approaches, Sinner maintained focus and conceded only one break point, closing out the first set 6-3.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Sinner securing a break in the third game. He continued to apply pressure, and ultimately closed out the match with another break of serve on Džumhur’s serve at 5-3.
“For me the transition game is very important, it also depends on the day,” Sinner said after the match. “Starting with a break is always important. I didn’t have much time to adjust to these conditions after Indian Wells but I’m happy to have won, first-round matches are never easy. The record of Djokovic? I am obviously happy, I am trying to do my thing. The important thing is to win, I try to do my best whoever my opponent is.”
Sinner’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Corentin Moutet and Tomas Machac. He is currently on a 12-match winning streak at ATP Masters 1000 events, having also secured titles at the Rolex Paris Masters in November and Indian Wells.
The No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings is bidding to become the first man to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’ – winning both Indian Wells and Miami in the same year – since Roger Federer in 2017.
