Sinner Breaks Djokovic’s Record & Eyes Miami Open Title | ATP Masters 1000
Jannik Sinner has broken Novak Djokovic’s decade-long record for consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 events, defeating Corentin Moutet 6-1, 6-4 at the Miami Open on Tuesday.
The 24-year-vintage Italian secured his 26th consecutive set victory, surpassing Djokovic’s previous benchmark of 24, which was set in 2014. Sinner had equaled the record earlier in the tournament with a win over Damir Dzumhur. The dominant performance against Moutet lasted just 71 minutes, showcasing Sinner’s commanding form.
“I am remarkably happy,” Sinner said after the match. “This sport is unpredictable, so we try to keep attention as much as we can and we’ll notice what is coming in the next round.”
Sinner’s streak extends back to his title runs at the Paris Masters in November and Indian Wells earlier this month, where he didn’t drop a set in either tournament. He began his current run of dominance by winning 19 of the first 26 points against Moutet, quickly taking control of the match and securing the first set in just 22 minutes.
The second set saw Sinner break Moutet’s serve in the fifth game, capitalizing on his fourth break point opportunity. He then served out the match without facing significant resistance, continuing his impressive run of form.
Sinner will now face American Alex Michelsen in the round of 16. A victory would keep him on track to potentially achieve the ‘Sunshine Double’ – winning both Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same year. Roger Federer was the last player to accomplish this feat, doing so in 2017.
