Singer Young Tak Reveals True Story Behind Hit Song Inspired By Ex-Girlfriend
Korean singer Young Tak revealed on the September 23rd broadcast of the MBC entertainment program Radio Star that his hit song “Why Are You There?” was inspired by discovering his ex-girlfriend cheating on him near Sadang Station. Appearing on the September 23rd special of Radio Star, Young Tak shared the true story behind the creation of his track “Why Are You There?”. Although he changed the setting to a club in the official version of the song, the narrative originated from a late-night incident around midnight near Sadang Station. Living near Konkuk University at the time, Young Tak recalled that his girlfriend told him her company dinner had ended around 11 p.m. and that she arrived home 30 minutes later.
A strange feeling prompted Young Tak to investigate. He wandered near Sadang Station and spotted his girlfriend with another man. Recalling the moment, Young Tak stated, “My heart went crazy. I stood there watching, and the man took a taxi first.” When he approached his girlfriend as she wandered alone and asked what she was doing, she appeared genuinely surprised.
Confrontation and the End of the Relationship
According to Young Tak, his girlfriend explained that she followed a colleague’s suggestion to have one more drink after the company dinner, reassuring him that she only had one drink separately. When he remained unconvinced, she offered to take him to the drinking establishment to verify the timeline.
Rejecting the trip to Sadang Station as unnecessary, Young Tak decided that attempting to retrace those steps signaled an irreversible breakdown in the relationship. “I thought going to that place was an action one takes when deciding to break up, so I just took her home and that was it,” he explained. While they attempted to continue the relationship afterward, the surrounding circumstances ultimately brought it to an end.
The Musase Inspiration Behind the Music
Reflecting on the origins of the hit track during the broadcast, Young Tak confirmed that his ex-girlfriend recognizes the song belongs to her. Characterizing her role in his creative process, Young Tak noted, “She thinks it’s her song. I’m supporting her from afar. In a way, I think she was my muse.”
