Singapore Upgrades Power Grid to Meet Rising Data Centre and EV Demand
Singapore is accelerating infrastructure and grid upgrades to support soaring power demand from data centres, advanced manufacturing, and electric vehicles while maintaining high reliability, channelnewsasia.com reported. Peak electricity demand is projected to grow by between 2.9 per cent and 6.5 per cent annually over the next decade, according to the Energy Market Authority’s 2026 demand projections.
The island nation currently hosts 70 data centres alongside a growing fleet of electric vehicles. EVs reached 49,262 vehicles by 2025, accounting for 7.4 per cent of the total car population—nearly double the 4 per cent share recorded the previous year.
Grid Upgrades and Regional Security Take Center Stage
Preparing the electrical network requires long-term demand planning and diversifying energy sources, according to the Energy Market Authority and SP Group. Speaking to CNA938 on Oct. 21, SP Group vice president of asset planning and strategy Quek Swee Xian stated that grid operators must understand not only total volume requirements, but also the precise geographic locations and timelines for new power loads. SP Group coordinates these demand projections alongside the JTC Corporation and the Economic Development Board.
The operational nature of the electrical network is shifting away from traditional one-way flows. Buildings equipped with solar panels can now draw electricity from the grid while simultaneously feeding surplus power back into it. This decentralization includes battery storage systems and prospective low-carbon electricity imports.

These infrastructure challenges converge ahead of the 19th Singapore International Energy Week, scheduled to run from Oct. 26 to 30, The Manila Times reported. The five-day summit, themed “Connect Energy Systems, Power Tomorrow,” will address regional power security, artificial intelligence data loads, and cross-border power connectivity with delegations from across Southeast Asia, including the Philippines and Indonesia.
Summit Stakeholders Examine Clean Energy Financing and Grid Resilience
As cross-border power links expand, utilities, regulators, and technology providers will gather to address the capital requirements needed to harden regional grids against rising consumption. The event opens on Oct. 26.
