Silver Price Surges Past $70: Could it Reach $130?

August 21, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Silver crossed the 70-dollar threshold for the first time on Tuesday, reaching a spot price of 70.61 US dollars per ounce according to MarketScreener data, driven by supply deficits, industrial demand, and a weakening US dollar. The milestone mirrors a broader macroeconomic flight to safety that also pushed spot gold near 4,500 US dollars per ounce amid shifting monetary policy expectations and escalating geopolitical tensions.

Macroeconomic Drivers and Market Dynamics Behind the Metal Surge

The white metal has climbed 143 percent since the beginning of the year. According to Ahmad Assiri, research strategist at Pepperstone, silver responds to many of the same macroeconomic factors as gold but exhibits heightened intensity due to its own supply and demand dynamics. Tight supply conditions, paired with investor and speculation demand, have reinforced price movements as the market approached the 70-dollar mark.

Parallel Record-Breaking Runs in Gold, Platinum, and Palladium

The broader precious metals complex is experiencing synchronized upward momentum. Spot gold climbed 0.9 percent to 4,486.99 US dollars per ounce, after touching an intraday record high of 4,497.55 US dollars, per MarketScreener tracking. US gold futures for February delivery advanced 1.1 percent to 4,518.80 US dollars.

Carlo Alberto De Casa, an external analyst at the banking group Swissquote, noted that expectations of a loose US Federal Reserve policy, declining confidence in the greenback, geopolitical tensions, and purchases by central banks continue to fuel investor demand. Compounding this backdrop, the US dollar extended its losses for a second session, tracking toward its largest annual decline since 2017.

Industrial precious metals participated fully in the rally. Spot platinum jumped 3.5 percent to 2,193.60 US dollars, marking its highest level in more than 17 years, while palladium gained 1.6 percent to reach a three-year high of 1,786.94 US dollars.

Geopolitical Pressures and Federal Reserve Policy Expectations

Geopolitical risks intensified last week when US President Donald Trump ordered a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, alongside statements not ruling out a war with the South American nation. Financial markets are currently pricing in two rate cuts for 2026. These monetary expectations gained traction following reports regarding plans to appoint a new Federal Reserve chair early next year.
