Shingles & Diabetes: Risks, Symptoms & Vaccine Guide

February 14, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Post-holiday disruptions to routine and diet are triggering a surge in shingles cases across China, health officials warn. The shift away from normal lifestyles during the recent Spring Festival holiday, particularly extended periods of staying up late and overindulging in food and travel, has weakened immune systems, creating an opportunity for the varicella-zoster virus – the cause of both chickenpox and shingles – to reactivate.

Individuals with underlying health conditions are particularly vulnerable. Dr. Guo Liping, chief physician in the endocrinology department at Peking Hospital (National Center for Geriatric Medicine), stated that individuals with diabetes are 60% more likely to develop shingles than those without the condition. “Diabetic patients have reduced cellular and humoral immunity, and a decreased resistance to infection,” Dr. Guo explained. “Especially if they do not get adequate rest during the holiday and fail to manage their blood sugar levels, their immunity is easily compromised.” Research indicates that a shingles outbreak significantly complicates blood sugar control in diabetic patients, increasing the likelihood of hospitalization and overall deterioration of health.

Health experts are emphasizing the importance of vaccination, particularly for older adults. Dr. Li Humin, chief physician of the dermatology department at Peking University People’s Hospital, recommends that individuals aged 50 and older who have not previously had shingles receive the vaccine. “The vaccine’s protective efficacy remains very high, and current evidence suggests it can provide protection for at least 10 years, significantly reducing the probability of developing shingles,” Dr. Li stated.

Early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Dr. Li Humin outlined key early symptoms to watch for: “The nerves affected by shingles are typically distributed on one side of the body. If you experience abnormal sensations – such as a prickling feeling, mild itching, or numbness – on one side of the chest, back, waist, or in one arm, leg, or head and face, you should suspect shingles.” These sensations can worsen with friction from clothing or changes in body position.

Within a few days of these initial sensations, redness appears on the affected skin, followed by the development of blisters. Medical professionals stress the importance of seeking treatment within 72 hours of symptom onset, a critical window for minimizing the risk of developing chronic pain. According to editorial standards outlined by the Council for Science Editors, editors have a responsibility to protect the confidentiality of author’s work and establish clear guidelines for handling ethical issues and allegations of misconduct. Senior editors also serve as guardians of editorial integrity, upholding standards of accuracy and consistency (AAF).

The Journal of the Association for Information Systems notes that senior editors are responsible for determining the final disposition of submitted papers, balancing author careers and the field’s intellectual development.
