Sherman & Newsom‌ Push ⁤for Further Federal Aid for California ⁤Fire Victims

WASHINGTON D.C.⁣ – Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) today met with California Governor Gavin ⁣Newsom to‍ advocate for increased federal assistance for‌ those impacted by the devastating Palisades and⁣ Eaton Fires. The⁤ meeting focused on securing a supplemental appropriations bill to provide⁣ additional relief, particularly for homeowners ‌who suffered uninsured losses.

“I’m⁣ incredibly grateful ‍for‍ Governor Newsom’s dedication to the communities and individuals affected by these fires, both during the immediate‌ crisis and ⁢throughout the recovery ⁣process,” said Congressman‍ Sherman.

Federal ‌Aid⁤ Already Delivered, But More is Needed

While‍ critically important federal aid has already been ⁣allocated, officials believe more is necessary‍ to fully address the scale of the⁤ disaster. The Biden administration initiated actions in its final days that have already delivered over $7 billion in‌ federal assistance to⁣ California for fire recovery. This includes $5 billion earmarked for crucial debris cleanup.

To date, approximately 35,000‍ households have received assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and over 12,500 low-interest loans totaling more than $3⁣ billion have⁣ been approved through the Small Business Administration (SBA). Sherman noted that the Trump ‍administration did not impede the implementation of these vital‌ aid programs.

$9.9 Billion Request⁢ for Uninsured ⁢Losses

Governor Newsom has formally requested a ‍supplemental appropriation from Congress, ⁤specifically seeking $9.9 ⁢billion in funding for grants ⁢to homeowners who experienced uninsured losses due to the⁣ fires. These grants would⁣ be⁤ administered through the Community Progress Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program.

“California deserves additional support‍ beyond the initial⁤ aid packages,” sherman emphasized. “It’s time for Congress to act ⁣swiftly and pass a supplemental appropriation to help the victims of⁢ what is, in terms of economic cost, the largest fire in American history.”

The Congressman expressed frustration with the pace of progress in Washington, urging ⁢lawmakers to prioritize the needs ⁤of fire‍ victims and expedite ⁢the delivery of critical financial assistance.
