Shanghai authorities are investigating reports of potential food safety issues with school lunches after concerned parents took to social media to voice their concerns. The Shanghai Education Commission confirmed on Thursday that samples of meals served on Monday are currently undergoing rigorous testing.
The issue surfaced when parents reported a shrimp and scrambled egg dish served at several schools smelled unpleasant. In response, some schools opted not to distribute the lunch boxes, instead providing students with alternative options like drinks and bread. Schools affected are located in the Xuhui, Putuo, and Minhang districts.
Acting swiftly, the Education Commission collaborated with the city’s market watchdog to launch an on-site investigation on Monday. Samples of the suspect dish and it’s constituent ingredients have been dispatched to both the shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research Co ltd and Shanghai Zhongwei Testing Technology Co Ltd. Results are anticipated within the week.
The meals in question were supplied by Shanghai Green Jie industrial Development Co Ltd, a major provider of school lunches across Shanghai. The company currently serves over 500 kindergartens, primary, and middle schools in all 16 districts, delivering more than 500,000 meals each day.
The Education Commission has pledged to prioritize student health and safety. Thay have committed to actively listening to feedback from students and parents, strictly enforcing campus food safety regulations, and working to improve the overall quality of school meals. Proposed measures include school officials joining students for meals, increased involvement of parent committees in meal supervision, and a broader range of menu choices.
Moreover, the Commission intends to strengthen its oversight of school meal providers and actively encourage participation from various sectors of society in monitoring efforts to ensure the well-being of students.
