Shane Larkin Credits European Basketball for Reinvigorating Career, Finding “Home” in Türkiye
ISTANBUL – Shane Larkin, the EuroBasket silver medalist and star guard for Anadolu Efes, revealed he intentionally chose a European basketball career to avoid a role as a fringe player in the NBA, stating he “didn’t want to be the third base in NBA.” Larkin emphasized his deep connection to Türkiye, declaring, “I felt at home and I didn’t want to go anywhere else.”
Larkin’s decision to pursue opportunities abroad stemmed from a desire for a more considerable role than he anticipated receiving in the NBA. “I didn’t want to make that type of contract without third base guarantees, waiting for someone to get injured. It’s like waiting for someone’s fall to take advantage of it.And that simply didn’t seem good to me,” he explained to Hoopshype. This led him to baskonia, where he felt a renewed passion for the game, stating, “I fell even more about basketball.”
His journey ultimately led him to Istanbul, where he now represents the Turkish national team. “Power now, after 7 or 8 years, sit here and play for the national team and represent Turkey means everything… The way they have supported me and welcomed me as one of yours has really enriched my life in many ways,” Larkin said.
the veteran guard also highlighted the distinct atmosphere and style of European basketball, contrasting it with the NBA. He noted the fervent fanbases in cities like Istanbul, Athens, and Belgrade, emphasizing a “pure passion” for the sport. Larkin described european basketball as “slower, more tactical and more physical,” with teams dedicating significant time to “Analyzing trends,” comparing the atmosphere to a ”University football Party.”
