Sevilla Crisis: Ramos’ Potential Takeover Amid Relegation Battle | LaLiga 2026
Sevilla Football Club is in crisis, seeking a new head coach for the 15th time in under a decade as the team battles to avoid relegation from LaLiga. The club, historically successful with seven major European trophies over the past two decades, now faces a precarious situation, three points above the relegation zone with nine league matches remaining.
The turmoil comes as Sergio Ramos, a former Sevilla player and club icon, is not being considered for the head coach position, according to reports. While a return for Ramos as a player is not ruled out, the club’s current predicament has shifted the focus towards finding a new manager to stabilize the team.
Graham Hunter, a Barcelona-based freelance writer specializing in La Liga, described the situation as “disastrous, humiliating” for a club of Sevilla’s stature. Hunter noted the in-fighting, incompetence and fan animosity plaguing the team, adding that even a commercially viable return for Ramos is being considered by supporters desperate for a turnaround.
The club’s struggles are a stark contrast to its recent successes, including a Europa League title in 2023 under José Luis Mendilibar. That team boasted players with World Cup experience, including Alejandro “Papu” Gómez, Ivan Rakitić, and Gonzalo Montiel, as well as established European players like Yassine Bounou and Lucas Ocampos. The current squad, however, lacks the same quality and cohesion.
The decline in player quality has been compounded by issues in the transfer market and a significant drop in the team’s overall performance. Sevilla has secured only six points from their last 39 available since December, and currently possesses the worst defensive record in LaLiga.
Adding to the club’s woes is the success of their city rivals, Real Betis, who recently won the Copa del Rey, reached the Europa League quarter-finals, and are contenders for Champions League qualification. This further intensifies the pressure on Sevilla to improve their performance.
Club president José María del Nido Carrasco recently acknowledged the difficult situation, stating he has “a clear conscience” regarding the club’s financial management over the past two years. He also addressed the personal attacks he has received, calling them “unpleasant and should be condemned.” Del Nido Carrasco confirmed that potential investors, including those linked to Sergio Ramos, have been informed about the club’s situation.
Sevilla’s remaining schedule presents a significant challenge, with upcoming matches against Atlético Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Osasuna, as well as crucial away games against teams also battling relegation. The club’s financial limitations, with the second-lowest salary cap in LaLiga, will further complicate efforts to strengthen the squad.
As of March 24, 2026, the future of Sevilla Football Club remains uncertain, with the club facing a critical period that could determine its fate in LaLiga.
