Sesko Strikes as Man Utd Climb to Fourth Amid Ratcliffe Division

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Benjamin Sesko scored the decisive goal as Manchester United defeated Everton 1-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, bolstering their Champions League qualification hopes. The victory marked a sixth game unbeaten for manager Michael Carrick, moving United into fourth place in the Premier League, three points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool.

The match took place against a backdrop of controversy surrounding Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently stated that the UK had been “colonised by immigrants.” The timing of the win, and the team’s performance, offered a stark contrast to the divisive rhetoric of its largest shareholder.

Sesko, introduced as a substitute in the 58th minute for Amad Diallo, secured the win in the 71st minute with a clinical finish following a counter-attack initiated by Matheus Cunha and a precise pass from Bryan Mbeumo. Carrick praised the striker’s current form, stating, “It was a ruthless finish that sums up where Ben is at the moment.” Sesko has now scored six goals in his last seven appearances for United, a significant improvement after a slower start to his career at the club.

Everton, meanwhile, continue to struggle at home, having now gone seven games without a win at Hill Dickinson Stadium and suffering six league defeats there this season. The home side pressed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but United goalkeeper Senne Lammens proved crucial, thwarting a series of Everton corners. Everton manager David Moyes acknowledged Lammens’s performance, saying, “We kept trying that [corner] routine thinking their goalie wouldn’t do as well as he did tonight, but he was bloody brilliant.”

The game began at a frenetic pace, with both teams creating early chances. Thierno Barry nearly capitalized on an early United turnover, while Kobbie Mainoo’s shot was cleared off the line by James Tarkowski. The first half lacked sustained quality, with James Garner forcing Lammens into his first save with a dipping free-kick.

Early in the second half, Harrison Armstrong’s shot was saved by Lammens, and Mbeumo missed a clear opportunity, volleying over the bar from a tight angle. Everton increased their pressure, with Iliman Ndiaye becoming increasingly influential, and both Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Idrissa Gueye came close to scoring.

Carrick’s introduction of Sesko proved to be the turning point. The winning goal came after Cunha collected a headed clearance and released Mbeumo, who beat Michael Keane for pace and found Sesko unmarked in the box. The Slovenian striker’s first-time finish secured the victory for United.

The win continues Carrick’s impressive start as Manchester United manager, with five wins and one draw from his six games in charge. The club posted a record revenue of £661.8 million in 2023-24, despite a net loss of £113.2 million, a financial situation Ratcliffe has previously characterized as precarious. A former financial advisor to Manchester City, Stefan Borson, has suggested that Ratcliffe “massively overplayed” the club’s financial issues.
