Sergio Pérez contemplates retirement citing family and Cadillac
Formula 1 driver Sergio Pérez, competing in his 300th Grand Prix weekend, is contemplating early retirement as he admits that getting Cadillac into a leading role in the sport will take more time than he initially thought, according to an interview with Televisa network reported by the Associated Press.
Pérez Considers Retirement as Cadillac Struggles
The 36-year-old Pérez missed last season after Red Bull dropped him, returning to the grid as Cadillac entered the top category. His best results this season are a pair of 14th-place finishes, and he has retired from five races due to various issues. Cadillac, which also has Valtteri Bottas driving for the team, sits at the bottom of the constructors’ championship without a single point.
“It’s a project that requires more time than I initially thought. I think giving a specific number of years is difficult, but it won’t be much longer,” Pérez said in the interview.
Pérez explained that a key reason for considering retirement is wanting to spend more time with his wife, Carola Martínez, and their four children. He stated that his children are at an age where he wants to be around more, noting that while he would love to stay as long as Fernando Alonso, his family commitments weigh heavily on his future.

Approaching Milestone Starts
Despite the team’s struggles at the bottom of the standings, Pérez expressed satisfaction with his current level of driving. He mentioned that people who understand Formula 1 recognize how he is driving, and that proving his capabilities to himself brought great satisfaction after the circumstances of recent years.
Pérez is gearing up to compete in the United States Grand Prix before heading to his home race, the Mexican Grand Prix, where he will reach 300 Formula 1 starts. He noted that he is excited about projects outside of motorsport and wants to finish his time in Formula 1 on a high note, adding that he will announce his retirement date soon.
