Sequim Standoff Suspect Ordered for Competency Treatment
A sequim man accused of firing at law enforcement during a standoff last month has been ordered to undergo 90 days of competency restoration treatment at Western State Hospital. Justin Cox, 37, is facing multiple felony charges, including six counts of first-degree assault.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Stanley signed the order last week, following a recommendation from a forensic evaluator at Western State Hospital. The evaluator, Barry Ward, indicated that Cox’s competency is likely to be restored, but he is currently unable to assist in his defense or understand the legal proceedings against him. Cox’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 26.
The incident occurred on June 17, when Cox allegedly barricaded himself in a Carlsborg residence and discharged a firearm, reportedly hitting an armored vehicle. He also allegedly threatened a Clallam County deputy. According to arrest reports, Cox made statements identifying himself as “Jesus” and claiming divine dialog.
Following his arrest, Cox was transported to Olympic Medical Center, where he required sedation due to belligerent behavior. He later refused to leave his jail cell for initial court hearings, stating he only answered to “Yahweh.” Cox faces charges including first-degree assault (six counts), second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, obstructing law enforcement, felony malicious mischief, and felony harassment.
