Park Cheol-woo Assumes Leadership of Seoul central District Prosecutors Office Amidst Controversy
The appointment follows a recent reshuffle and ongoing scrutiny regarding a high-profile corruption case.
Seoul, South Korea – Park Cheol-woo officially began his tenure as the head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office on Friday. He pledged to prioritize the stabilization of the prosecutorial association, acknowledging the significant responsibility and the urgent need to rebuild public trust and bolster morale within the ranks.
“I feel a heavy burden as I take on this important responsibility,” Park stated following his appointment, which was announced as part of a wider reshuffle on Wednesday. “Restoring public trust in the prosecution and boosting the morale of it’s members are urgent priorities.”
Park’s appointment has drawn considerable attention and sparked debate. He was previously serving as the head of the Supreme Prosecutors Office’s anticorruption department when the prosecution opted not to appeal a ruling in the so-called Daejang-dong corruption case. This decision prompted the resignation of Jung Jin-woo, the former chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, just two weeks prior.
Reporters questioned Park regarding the Daejang-dong case, which centers on allegations involving President Lee Jae Myung’s actions during his time as mayor of seongnam, a city located south of Seoul. However, Park declined to offer detailed responses to the inquiries.
