Senne Lammens Shines: Man Utd Goalkeeper Praised as Champions League Hope Grows

February 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Benjamin Sesko scored his third goal in four appearances as a substitute to secure a 1-0 victory for Manchester United over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, continuing Michael Carrick’s impressive run as the club’s head coach.

The 22-year-old Slovenian striker, who came on in the 71st minute, finished a sweeping counter-attack, converting a pass from Bryan Mbeumo after being set up by Matheus Cunha. The goal extended United’s unbeaten run to 10 Premier League games, their longest streak since a 14-game run between January and May 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

While Sesko’s impact from the bench continues to be pivotal, the victory also highlighted the growing influence of another recent acquisition, goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The 23-year-old Belgian produced a crucial save to deny Michael Keane a spectacular equaliser, and subsequently dealt confidently with a barrage of Everton set-pieces.

“Their goalie was brilliant tonight,” Everton manager David Moyes said bluntly after the match. “The save he made from Michael, the way he dealt with corner kicks. The pressure we had. For me, their goalkeeper was the best player.”

Carrick acknowledged Lammens’ performance, drawing parallels with another celebrated Manchester United goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar. “I’ve got to be careful what I say,” Carrick said. “I don’t want to be comparing them given that I don’t think it’s fair to Senne. But there’s definitely similarities.”

Carrick elaborated on the qualities he values in Lammens. “You want a goalkeeper to be reliable, and trustworthy. Instead of creating a chaos, you want him to take the chaos away and calm things down. I think Senne is that. He’s quite quiet at times and unassuming, but he’s got real steel. It’s a big role for some, and it’s about being comfortable in your environment.”

The success of Sesko and Lammens represents a vindication of the club’s recruitment strategy, particularly the decision to overlook calls from former manager Ruben Amorim to sign Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez and instead invest in the relatively unproven Lammens for a fee of £18.1 million.

United’s recent form has shifted the club’s ambitions for the season. While initial targets focused on securing a Europa League place, director of football Jason Wilcox reportedly communicated a more ambitious goal of Champions League qualification to the players following Amorim’s departure.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes United are now well-positioned to achieve that aim. “Manchester United are now virtually guarantees for one of the Champions League places,” Carragher said. “I can’t see them not making it.”
