Selena Gomez’s Favorite ‘Who Says’ Song Sparks Re-Recording Thoughts

Los Angeles, CA – Selena Gomez revealed in a recent interview that a potential tour return hinges on her ability too perform her 2011 anthem, “Who Says.” The actress and singer, currently starring in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, shared her feelings during an appearance on the Therapuss podcast hosted by Danielle Schneider.

Gomez, who last toured in 2016 with her Revival Tour, admitted she’d need to adjust the song’s key to accommodate changes in her vocal range. “I’d have to take it down an octave from each year I’ve sang it,” she explained. She also expressed interest in re-recording the track, feeling her current voice differs significantly from the younger sound on the original 2011 recording.

“I need to redo it,” Gomez stated. “I should recut it.” The song, released as the second single from her album When the Sun Goes Down, peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in April 2011.

Beyond the technical aspects, Gomez spoke to the enduring emotional resonance of “Who Says.” She recounted a especially moving experience while listening to the song on the radio during a trip to italy, becoming unexpectedly emotional. “I was like,’Why the f-k am I tearing up to my own song?'” she recalled. “But it was becuase it was the little me who was there saying these really powerful messages that I still need to hear.”

The Emilia Pérez actress also reflected on the origins of her close friendship with Taylor Swift, revealing their bond formed in the aftermath of simultaneous breakups with members of the Jonas Brothers – specifically, Nick Jonas and joe Jonas, respectively. “She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other,” Gomez shared. “We became best friends, bonded over the breakup,as girls do. Then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after, and here we are now 16 years later.”

Gomez’s most recent musical project, a collaborative album with producer Benny Blanco titled I Said I Love You First, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart in May 2024, selling 83,000 equivalent album units in its first week. The album features contributions from artists like Joji and Coi Leray.
