Selena Gomez and Wondermind Sued for Allegedly Defrauding Investors

August 13, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Selena Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, face a civil lawsuit filed in court by investors who accuse the co-founders of allegedly defrauding financial backers of the mental health startup Wondermind to keep the failing venture afloat. According to court documents obtained by TMZ and reported in the article, the plaintiffs—Wondermind SRS 44 LLC and Bespoke Wondermind LCC—claim the founders misrepresented the infrastructure, leadership, and operational resources needed to run the platform.

The Investor Fraud Allegations and Financial Collapse

The lawsuit details how Wondermind allegedly continued accepting capital while experiencing severe internal collapse. According to court filings, investors alleged they invested more than $1 million into the multimedia mental health platform. The plaintiffs stated in the docket, “For three years, while the company quietly collapsed around them, not one of its founders, officers or directors said a word to the investors whose money was funding the collapse.” The legal action charges Gomez and Teefey with securities fraud, with plaintiffs seeking unspecified damages and a return on their investments. Neither Gomez nor Teefey have publicly addressed the lawsuit.

Cracks in the startup’s foundation first became public through a 2025 exposé published in The Cut, which described Wondermind in a state of utter disarray. Subsequent reports in May 2025 confirmed that the firm had laid off 60 percent of its staff amid mounting financial distress. Employees reported that payroll checks bounced on March 31 and April 30, 2025, and health insurance policies were terminated weeks prior to staff notification. While a Wondermind spokesperson stated at the time that the firm had transitioned into a new chapter and rectified outstanding debts, the loss of staff and failed fundraising rounds crippled daily operations.

Contrasting Business Portfolios: Rare Beauty Versus Wondermind

Launched in 2019 and managed operationally by industry veteran Scott Friedman, Rare Beauty generated millions in sales in 2023. Forbes estimates Gomez’s net worth, largely driven by her 51 percent stake in Rare Beauty. Industry analysts note that this wealth remains primarily tied up in private equity and paper assets rather than liquid cash, limiting the star’s ability to bail out struggling secondary ventures.

Internal accounts published by Forbes.cz indicate that Gomez’s involvement in Wondermind was largely ambassadorial. While listed as “chief innovation officer,” an anonymous employee stated that Gomez met with staff only once over a three-year span and had little input on daily strategy. Day-to-day management fell to Mandy Teefey, who served as co-founder and chief executive officer. Teefey previously faced allegations of workplace misconduct and substance struggles reported by former employees in The Cut—claims that Teefey vehemently denied in statements to Us Magazine, calling them lies spread by disgruntled workers.
