Sejong City sends 750 student-athletes to national sports festival
Sejong City is expanding its competitive high school sports footprint for the 2026 season by sending 60 teams and approximately 750 student-athletes to the national학교스포츠클럽 축전, which opens its doors to graduating seniors for the very first time.
Expanding the National Stage for High School Seniors
Hosted by the Ministry of Education and organized by each city and province alongside the Korea School Sports Association, the major showcase runs from October 23, starting with tee-ball, through December 13 at various venues nationwide. This year’s tournament scales up from 12 disciplines in 2025 to a total of 14 sports categories. The expansion introduces dedicated brackets for 12th-grade students: boys high school volleyball and girls high school badminton.
These freshly minted brackets function as crucial transition tournaments. They effectively replace the previous Ministry of Education Cup basketball and volleyball competitions that wrapped up last year. To meet the moment, Sejong will field unified teams anchored by Areum High School for senior boys volleyball, alongside Bangok High School for the senior boys and girls badminton divisions, giving students nearing graduation an opportunity to harmonize as combined squads and enjoy matches with peers from other regions.
Student-Athletes Compete in Eight Regional Sports
Student-athletes from across the region are set to clash in football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, netball, flying disc, kinball, and futsal.
Weekend Scheduling Protects Academic Calendars
Organizers have structured the timeline to protect students’ academic schedules, intentionally scheduling the vast majority of matches on weekends to allow students to balance classes and sports activities while minimizing impacts on the academic calendar.
Sejong participants previously captured four gold medals, five silver medals, and five bronze medals across 12 disciplines in the national showcase.
Superintendent Kang Mi-ae Calls for Safe Competition
Superintendent Kang Mi-ae stated, I hope this becomes a meaningful opportunity to grow strong in both body and mind while enjoying sports in harmony with students from other regions,
and requested that school officials provide support for safe participation and the learning of sports values.
