Seattle Seahawks Sign Veteran RB Joe Mixon to Practice Squad
Practice Squad Addition Brings Experience
The 30-year-old veteran enters the organization’s practice squad to work on his conditioning and learn the playbook. He arrives following a full season away from football due to a foot injury.
Mounting Injuries Drive Roster Move
Heading into the early stretch of the 2026 NFL season, Seattle holds a 3-1 record in the NFC.
The franchise moved to add depth to its backfield as injuries mount within the roster. First-round pick Jadarian Price recently landed on the injured reserve list due to a chest injury, while Zach Charbonnet continues his recovery from a knee injury.
Proven Pedigree in the Backfield
Mixon brings an extensive resume to the Pacific Northwest.
Selected in the second round of the 2017 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, he rushed for over 1,000 yards in five separate seasons during his career. He spent his first seven years with Cincinnati before moving to the Houston Texans.
Rebounding From a Lost Year in Houston
During the 2024 season in Houston, Mixon recorded 1,016 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns across 14 games, earning his second career Pro Bowl selection.
However, a foot injury limited him throughout 2025, and the Texans released him in March 2026, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Evaluating the Veteran’s Timeline
While the Seahawks do not face immediate pressure to hand Mixon a heavy workload, his background provides stability for a competitive roster dealing with backfield absences. The coaching staff will evaluate how quickly the veteran running back can regain his form on the practice field.
