Smithsonian American Art Museum Launches Enhanced Search Capabilities

WASHINGTON,D.C. – The Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery today announced expanded search functionality on its website, offering users more precise ways to explore its vast collections, events, and resources. Visitors can now directly search across nine distinct content types: artists, Artworks, Events, Exhibitions, Fellows, general web pages, Press Releases, Stories, and Videos.

The updated search interface allows users to initially enter any search term or phrase. Following an initial search, a content-type filter becomes available, enabling focused exploration. direct links to specific search pages are available for:

  1. type=artwork”>Artworks
  2. type=exhibition&sort=desc”>Exhibitions
  3. type=pressrelease&sort=desc”>Press Releases
  4. type=remote_video&sort=desc”>Video

Once a content type is selected, additional filters become available. for example, artwork searches can be refined by artwork type, medium, period, artist, and on-view location. Results can then be sorted by chronological order, reverse chronological order, or relevance. For users seeking even more granular search options – including filters for culture, topic, and name – the Smithsonian recommends utilizing the Smithsonian Collections Search Center at https://collections.si.edu/search/.
