Leading Health Organizations Call on FDA to Halt Unauthorized Tobacco Product Marketing
WASHINGTON,D.C. – September 26, 2025 – A coalition of prominent health groups is urging the Food and drug management (FDA) to immediately prevent major tobacco companies from marketing new tobacco products that have not received necessary authorization. The american Heart Association is among the organizations demanding stricter enforcement of regulations designed to protect public health.
The groups argue that the continued sale and promotion of thes unauthorized products-including e-cigarettes and flavored tobacco-undermines the FDA’s authority and poses significant risks, particularly to young people. The FDA originally established a premarket review process for new tobacco products in 2009, requiring manufacturers to demonstrate that their products are appropriate for the protection of public health. Though, companies have continued to introduce products without awaiting agency clearance, creating a regulatory gap that health advocates say must be closed.
“for too long, tobacco companies have operated with impunity, flooding the market with potentially harmful products while circumventing the FDA’s review process,” said a representative from the American Heart Association. “This action is a critical step towards holding these companies accountable and protecting the health of our communities.”
the coalition’s call to action comes as concerns grow over the rising rates of youth vaping and the potential long-term health consequences of e-cigarette use. The groups emphasize that the FDA has a obligation to enforce existing regulations and ensure that all tobacco products meet established safety standards before being made available to consumers.
