SE 29th Street in Topeka to Close for Six-Month Construction Project
The City of Topeka announced that a stretch of SE 29th Street at Butcher Creek will close to through traffic beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026.
SE 29th Street Construction Details and Project Scope
The upcoming closure extends just east of SE Kansas Place to Church’s Chicken, located at 201 SE 29th Street. City officials stated that this specific shutdown is necessary to allow construction crews to safely complete intensive work on the Butcher Creek box culvert, remove and replace full-depth pavement sections, and install new water and sanitary sewer infrastructure.
The broader SE 29th Street improvement project spans from Kansas Avenue to Adams Street. According to municipal project documents, the comprehensive overhaul includes structural modifications to the Butcher Creek bridge, extensive pavement repairs, roadway widening, and storm and sanitary sewer replacement. Crews will also install a new traffic signal at the intersection of SE 29th Street and Fremont/Cunningham.
Construction on the broader corridor officially began on June 22, 2026. Current municipal schedules project that all improvements will wrap up by summer 2027.
Traffic Detours and Motorist Advisories
With the roadway severed at Butcher Creek for approximately six months, the City of Topeka is directing motorists to plan ahead and utilize designated alternate routes. Drivers in the area are urged to exercise caution near the active work zone and follow all posted traffic control signage.
Through traffic will be carried on a marked detour route. Motorists traveling around the closure can use Kansas Avenue to 37th Street or 21st Street, connecting via Adams Street back to 29th Street.
Residents and business owners seeking specific engineering blueprints, up-to-date schedules, or project maps can review the details directly through the City of Topeka’s Street & Related Projects page.
