Psychiatrists Detail ‘Control’ and ‘Memorial Blur’ in Joël Le Scouarnec Case
The criminal trial of Joël Le Scouarnec, the former surgeon accused of extensive child sexual abuse, has taken a chilling turn as psychiatrists who interviewed him describe a disturbing lack of emotion and a calculated demeanor. Isabelle Alamone and Jean-Jacques Dumond, who assessed Le Scouarnec in 2023 while he was in detention, highlighted the extreme control
exhibited by the accused during their interview.
Ms. Alamone noted the absence of remorse or empathy, stating,He did not show any emotion, with very little room for the victims
and no compassion.
She further characterized him as cold
and said, He is very economical with words, with sometimes a somewhat contrite attitude to which we have trouble believing.
The Dichotomy of Expression
The psychiatrists were particularly struck by the stark contrast between Le Scouarnec’s verbal expression and his detailed written records. They observed a great gap between the poverty of his expression
and the richness of the notebooks
in which he meticulously documented the sexual violence inflicted on his victims.
A Calculated Persona?
The court is grappling with the question of whether Le Scouarnec is a calculating individual.Alamone responded to this query by stating, There is no spontaneity in his speech, as if he weighed all his words knowing the consequences that it could have.
Dumond added, This gentleman is an enigma and the main enigma is in contrast
with a insignificant character when we meet him.
‘Memorial Blur’ and Confessions
Adding another layer of complexity to the case, the psychiatrists expressed surprise at the very critically important memorial blur
displayed by le scouarnec. While he ultimately confessed to all the alleged acts before Morbihan’s criminal court, the 74-year-old has claimed to have no specific memory of the violence he is accused of committing since the start of his trial.
