Scotland Walk-in Clinics: Will They Deliver 1 Million Appointments?
Scotland’s government has pledged over one million additional general practitioner (GP) and nurse appointments through a network of 16 new walk-in clinics, but analysis by BBC Verify raises questions about the feasibility of meeting that target and the timeline for full implementation.
The commitment of one million appointments applies over a year, contingent on all 16 clinics reaching full operational capacity – a milestone not expected before the summer, according to the Scottish Government. Specific capacity details for each clinic have not yet been publicly released.
A freedom of information request revealed planning documents for three clinics in the NHS Grampian area, outlining a projected 90,720 patient slots annually across sites in Aberdeen, Elgin, and Peterhead. An Edinburgh clinic, which opened earlier this month, anticipates approximately 21,360 patient visits over the course of a year, according to the clinical director for NHS Lothian.
NHS Fife submitted plans last month for a clinic in Buckhaven with a projected annual capacity of 64,240 appointments, though approval for this proposal remains pending.
Dr. Chris Provan, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners Scotland, expressed uncertainty regarding the government’s promise. “It’s not clear how the 16 pilot sites will achieve the Scottish government’s promise of one million appointments per year,” he said.
The Scottish government’s plan to increase access to primary care comes as independent climate change advisors warned on February 25, 2026, that the nation’s plan to install heat pumps is “too slow,” according to a report by the BBC. The climate change committee (CCC) described the government’s plan as “unambitious” and warned of challenges for the supply chain. Climate Action Secretary Gillian Martin stated the government would consider the feedback alongside public consultation results when finalizing its climate change plan.
The BBC reported on February 25, 2026, that the Scottish government recently dropped a heat pumps bill for the second time. The report also noted that Scotland was given new 20-year targets in a climate report published in May 2025.
The Scottish government, responsible for areas including health, education, and the economy, has not yet announced a firm date for the release of detailed capacity information for all 16 walk-in clinics.
