Scooby-Doo Returns to Netflix: Release Date & Details
Netflix has greenlit a live-action adaptation of the classic animated series Scooby-Doo!, marking the first time the franchise will be reimagined as a television series in live-action format. The streaming platform officially confirmed the project in March 2025, following initial reports in April 2024, according to multiple sources.
The series will star McKenna Grace, Tanner Hagen, Abby Ryder Fortson, and Maxwell Jenkins as the core mystery-solving group. Although the specific roles each actor will play have not been publicly disclosed, their casting signals a fresh take on the beloved characters.
The production is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Television and Netflix, with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serving as showrunners and writers. Appelbaum and Rosenberg operate under their Midnight Radio banner, with André Nemec, Sarah Schechter, and Jeff Pinkner also serving as executive producers. Greg Berlanti, a prolific producer with a long-standing relationship with Warner Bros., is also an executive producer through Berlanti Productions, with Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman also credited as executive producers.
This adaptation builds on the existing Scooby-Doo! legacy, which includes numerous animated series and two live-action films released in the early 2000s. While those films initially received negative reviews, they have since gained a cult following. The new Netflix series represents a significant investment in the franchise and a departure from previous adaptations by being structured as a television series.
Midnight Radio, the production company led by Appelbaum and Rosenberg, previously worked with Netflix on the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. They also have credits on the MGM+ series From and the film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The creative team’s involvement suggests a commitment to delivering a contemporary and engaging take on the Scooby-Doo! universe.
The series is currently in development, with an expected release sometime in 2027. No further details regarding the plot or specific character portrayals have been released by Netflix or Warner Bros. Television.
