Led by Curtin University alongside the Schmidt Ocean Institute and the Western Australian Museum, the deep-sea expedition utilized eDNA protocols to confirm the presence of Architeuthis dux across six separate water samples collected in the Cape Range and Cloates submarine canyons.

The giant squid remains one of the ocean’s most elusive marine animals, capable of growing between 30 and 40 feet in length and weighing up to 600 pounds. These massive cephalopods feature eyes up to 12 inches across, the largest in the animal kingdom, designed to spot prey in pitch-black waters exceeding 14,000 feet in depth. Despite deploying high-tech cameras and remotely operated vehicles down into the submarine canyons, scientists did not secure a visual sighting during the expedition. Instead, the team relied on environmental DNA, capturing microscopic genetic material shed through skin, mucus, and tissue.

According to lead author Dr. Georgia Nester of Curtin University, eDNA allows researchers to confirm fragile, rare, and fast-moving species that traditional cameras and nets frequently miss. Dr. Lisa Kirkendale, Head of Aquatic Zoology at the Western Australian Museum, noted that the discovery marks the first record of a giant squid detected off Western Australia’s coast using eDNA protocols and stands as the northernmost record of the species in the eastern Indian Ocean.
