Mount Erebus, an active volcano located on Ross Island in Antarctica, is currently emitting approximately 80 grams of gold per day through its volcanic gas emissions. Researchers have tracked the presence of gold particles, ranging in size from 0.1 to 20 micrometers, in the ambient air as far as 1,000 kilometers from the summit, according to data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Observatory.

The gold emissions are a byproduct of the volcano’s unique geological activity. Mount Erebus is one of the few volcanoes on Earth with a persistent convecting phonolitic lava lake. As magma rises from the depths, it carries dissolved gases and minerals to the surface. When this magma reaches the summit crater, the pressure drop causes the release of gases, which transport microscopic gold particles into the atmosphere.

NASA scientists confirmed that these particles are ejected alongside other volcanic gases and aerosols. While the daily output of 80 grams is significant in geological terms, the particles are widely dispersed by wind currents across the Antarctic continent. This distribution makes the collection of the precious metal impractical, as the gold is spread thin across vast, inaccessible ice fields.

The presence of gold in the plume was identified through long-term monitoring of the volcano’s chemical signature. Unlike explosive volcanoes that release material during sudden eruptive events, Erebus provides a steady, continuous stream of volcanic byproducts. This stability has allowed atmospheric researchers to measure the plume composition with high precision over several decades.

Institutional Monitoring and Future Research

The ongoing monitoring of Mount Erebus is primarily conducted to understand volcanic hazards and atmospheric chemistry rather than resource extraction. The volcano remains under constant surveillance by international research teams, including the New Zealand Antarctic Program and various academic institutions, to track seismic activity and gas output levels.

Despite the high value of the material being emitted, there are no industrial or commercial initiatives to recover the gold. The logistical challenges of operating on the Antarctic ice shelf, combined with the extreme dispersion of the particles, render recovery efforts unfeasible. Researchers continue to focus on how these volcanic emissions influence the atmospheric composition of the Southern Hemisphere and the broader geological history of the Ross Island region.
