Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Missing: Investigation Updates & How Tips Can Help

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Eleven days after the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, investigators continue to pursue leads in the case, with a recent detainment yielding no immediate answers. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Wednesday they have received nearly 18,000 calls since Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1st.

A potential breakthrough on Tuesday, when authorities detained an individual for questioning, proved temporary. The person was released hours later, leaving investigators without a suspect and the public with renewed uncertainty. Prior to the detainment, the FBI released surveillance footage showing a masked individual on Nancy Guthrie’s porch the night she vanished, appearing to carry a handgun. The footage prompted a renewed plea from Savannah Guthrie for information on Instagram, stating her family believes their mother is still alive.

The lack of progress has drawn scrutiny to the investigation, with no public news conferences held in recent days. While the case may appear stalled, experts suggest that investigations often experience periods of apparent inactivity before yielding results. Mary Ellen O’Toole, a former FBI profiler who worked on high-profile cases like the hunt for the “Unabomber,” explained that such lulls are not uncommon.

The released surveillance footage is a key component of the current strategy, mirroring tactics used in other investigations. O’Toole cited the case of Ted Kaczynski, whose 17-year bombing campaign ended when his brother recognized his writing style in a published manifesto and alerted the FBI. Similarly, the arrest of Luigi Mangione, accused of shooting the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, came after a tipster recognized him at a McDonald’s. Investigators hope someone recognizing the masked figure on Guthrie’s property will come forward.

Forensic evidence is also being analyzed. Investigators confirmed that DNA found on Nancy Guthrie’s porch matched her, and are continuing to search for DNA evidence belonging to a potential suspect. The use of DNA evidence has been crucial in recent cases, such as the arrest of Bryan Kohberger in the University of Idaho murders, where trace DNA on a knife sheath led to his identification through genealogical databases and surveillance footage.

Another case highlighted by investigators involved the shooting at Brown University in 2025. A tip from an individual who encountered a person of interest in a bathroom, noting unusual clothing and nervous behavior, led to the identification of the shooter and the discovery of a suicide note. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s safe return, hoping to incentivize similar tips.

FBI spokesperson Connor Hagan stated previously, “Someone has that one piece of information that can help us bring Nancy home.” The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to analyze evidence and pursue leads.
