Saudi Arabia to Participate in 2027 CONCACAF Gold Cup under New Format
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) has officially overhauled the format for the Gold Cup, transitioning from a four-group structure to two expanded groups starting with the 2027 tournament. The competition will run from June 17 to July 11, 2027, with the Saudi Arabian national team confirmed as a guest participant for the second time.
New Group Stage Format Guarantees Four Matches per Team
The previous format utilized 16 teams divided into four groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. The updated structure features two groups of eight teams each. Under this new configuration, the top four finishers from each group will progress to the knockout stages. This change ensures that every participating nation plays at least four matches, an increase from the three guaranteed games in the former format.
CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani stated that the organization expects the new group stage to increase the stakes of every match. Montagliani noted that teams will face a balanced mix of opponents while competing for spots in the knockout rounds. The 2027 field will consist of 15 teams from the CONCACAF region, who secured their places through the Nations League, alongside the guest entry from Saudi Arabia.
Scheduling and Logistics for 2027
The tournament is set to host matches in the United States, adhering to a timeline that concludes on July 11. The official draw to determine the group matchups is scheduled for April 8, 2027. The competition will utilize the FIFA international rankings to determine the distribution of teams within the two large groups, followed by a standard single-elimination bracket once the quarterfinalists are decided.
