Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter are joining the cast of Saturday Night Live as cast members for Season 52, bringing a definitive end to a notable drought of Black female representation among the show’s regular ensemble. The late-night institution, which returns on September 26, with host Jalen Brunson, actively restructured its roster following intensive multi-city auditions that scouted talent across Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
Closing the Representation Gap in Season 52
The addition of Belo-Osagie addresses a casting void that persisted throughout Season 51. Following the departure of Ego Nwodim at the conclusion of Season 50, the NBC sketch comedy series operated for an entire season without a regularly featured woman of color in its cast. Show executives prioritized rectifying this imbalance during summer casting showcases.
Belo-Osagie arrives on the show with deep roots in New York performance art. Born in Queens and raised in Elmont, she created the event series Afrobeats Futura and the solo show Saidah Gets Closure. Her credits also include writing and directing the short film Tinge and hosting the variety show UNSCRIPTED. Like Nwodim, Belo-Osagie shares Nigerian heritage, positioning her to carry forward a distinct lineage within the program.
The Selection Process Across Three Cities
The pathway to the Season 52 cast involved a rigorous scouting process managed by the Saturday Night Live production team. The circuit included a specialized “Characters Showcase” in Los Angeles on August 6, stops at the Annoyance Theatre and The iO Theater in Chicago on August 10 and 11, and New York showcases hosted at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre on August 17 and 18.

The historical roster of Black female regular cast members on Saturday Night Live remains relatively concise. Danitra Vance broke ground during the 1985–1986 season as the first Black woman hired as a regular cast member. Ellen Cleghorne followed as the first multi-season Black female cast member from 1991 to 1995. Maya Rudolph maintained a prominent run from 2000 to 2007, establishing herself as a foundational sketch performer. Following a multi-year gap, Sasheer Zamata and Leslie Jones joined together in 2014, with Jones transitioning from the writing staff. Nwodim maintained her tenure from 2018 to 2025, while Punkie Johnson joined the ensemble in 2020. Yvonne Hudson also appeared as a featured player during the 1980–1981 season.
