Saskia Reeves-Priestley collapse highlights vitamin D deficiency risks

November 7, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Saskia Reeves-Priestley, a 23-year-old special education teacher who played competitive soccer four times a week, collapsed suddenly at her workplace. Despite her active lifestyle, medical examinations revealed her vitamin D levels were near zero, as reported by the BBC.

The Diagnostic Gap in Young Adults

As the spine surgeon José Francisco Lizón explains, the nutrient is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine, which is vital for maintaining strong bones.

The clinical challenge lies in the difficulty of identifying deficiency before it reaches a critical state. According to data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, nearly one-quarter of individuals aged 11 to 18 in the UK are currently diagnosed with this deficiency. The biological mechanism involves the role of vitamin D as a prohormone essential for calcium absorption, bone mineralization, and immune system regulation. When levels drop, the body may experience osteomalacia—the adult equivalent of rickets—which leaves bones soft and prone to fractures. Dr. Uday warns that if this is not corrected early, this is going to affect several generations.

Debate Over Clinical Thresholds and Dietary Policy

A growing coalition of medical professionals, operating under the banner of “ACT NOW Vitamin D,” is calling for a revision of the current thresholds used to define deficiency. Professor Martin Hewison of the University of Birmingham suggests that for certain groups, it may be necessary to accept that vitamin D supplementation should be a regular practice.

There is significant divergence in how countries address this deficiency. Experts caution that attempting to correct a deficiency through prolonged sun exposure increases the risk of cutaneous damage without guaranteeing a physiological correction of serum levels. However, this does not justify avoiding sun protection entirely, as there are other safe ways to obtain it, such as through diet and indicated supplementation. For example, an 85g portion of cooked sockeye salmon provides nearly 70% of the daily value of vitamin D.

Clinical Considerations for Supplementation

The Endocrine Society’s 2024 guidance, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, highlights the nuance required in clinical decision-making. While empiric supplementation is recommended for specific groups, such as adults aged 75 and older, universal supplementation lacks broad consensus. Clinical practice necessitates a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D test to determine the appropriate dosage, as vitamin D is fat-soluble and can reach toxic levels if mismanaged. Recent research also emphasizes its role in cardiovascular health, specifically in regulating blood pressure and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

When patients present with indicators of low vitamin D, such as unexplained fatigue, muscle weakness, or bone pain, it is standard of care to prioritize a formal diagnostic workup. Patients should seek evaluation from a board-certified endocrinologist or a primary care physician who can interpret these markers within the context of the patient’s individual metabolic health. While 10 to 15 minutes of exposure on limbs, three to four times a week, is often cited as a way to trigger synthesis, professionals emphasize that supplementation must never be started on one’s own or under a free prescription model.

As research continues to evolve, the medical community remains focused on balancing the prevention of skeletal fragility with the mitigation of systemic risks.
