The Regional Council of Sardinia, acting on a proposal from President Alessandra Todde, who also serves as interim Assessor for Hygiene and Health and Social Assistance, approved two resolutions on Friday, February 22nd, appointing new general directors for two of the island’s local health authorities.
Aldo Atzori has been designated to lead the Local Health Authority (ASL) n. 8 of Cagliari, even as Antonio Irione will head the Local Health Authority (ASL) n. 2 of Gallura. Both appointments will take effect on February 23rd, 2026, and will be for a three-year term, according to a statement released by the regional government.
The appointments are part of a broader effort to reorganize and strengthen the regional health governance, officials stated. Atzori previously served as Commissioner of ASL 8 in Cagliari, bringing with him extensive experience in local and hospital healthcare management, according to reports.
The decision to move forward with the appointments was made despite the absence of three assessors representing the Democratic Party – Giuseppe Meloni, Rosanna Laconi, and Emanuele Cani – as well as Francesco Agus, the assessor for Agriculture and representative of the Progressives. Their absence reportedly signals a lack of consensus within the governing coalition, both on the nominated individuals and on the decision to proceed with the appointments before reaching an agreement with the previously removed general directors.
The regional council’s actions follow a period of upheaval within the Sardinian healthcare system. The appointments of Atzori and Irione were adopted by the Regional Council on the proposal of President Todde, as confirmed by both Cagliari News and Rainews.
The new directors will assume their roles on February 23rd, 2026, with their terms lasting three years, as detailed in a report by Sardiniapost. The regional government has not yet announced any further steps regarding the ongoing reorganization of the healthcare system.
