Sarah Chalke Recalls Being Yelled at Over ‘Roseanne’ Role – and the Apology That Followed

Sarah Chalke recounted a peculiar encounter with a heckler at a Freedom Tibet rally shortly after joining the cast of Roseanne in 1993, an experience she revisited on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast, Dinner’s On Me. Chalke, who stepped into the role of Becky Conner following Lecy Goranson’s initial departure, described being approached by a fellow attendee who expressed a clear preference for the original actress.

“I remember being at a Freedom Tibet rally, and someone coming up to me,” Chalke said. “I just kind of had started and I just made some new friends, and I’m sitting with them, and they yelled at me and they were like, ‘I like the first Becky way better!’ And I was like, ‘Okay, yeah, she was fantastic. I agree. She was great.'”

The situation took an unexpected turn when the heckler returned shortly after to apologize. “And then he came back and he was like, ‘Hey, I just wanna apologize. I’ve always just, like, wanted to yell at an actor, and you were here. And, uh, so I’m sorry, and I didn’t mean it.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Thank you for clarifying.’”

Chalke’s casting as Becky Conner occurred after Goranson left the show during its sixth season to pursue her education, according to reports from the time. Goranson later returned to the role before the show’s cancellation and eventual revival. The character swap became a recurring joke within the series itself. Chalke later appeared in the 2018 revival of Roseanne, not as Becky, but as Andrea, a potential surrogate for the character. Following the show’s cancellation and rebranding as The Conners, Chalke reprised her role as Becky, with storylines exploring themes of motherhood, and sobriety.

Born August 27, 1976, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Chalke is also known for her roles as Elliot Reid in Scrubs, and Beth Smith in Rick and Morty. She is currently preparing for the return of Scrubs to ABC on Wednesday, February 25, with new episodes available the following day on Hulu.
