Santa Clara County Seeks Higher Sales Tax to Protect Hospital Patients

Santa Clara county Leaders secure Purchase of East San Jose Hospital, Bolstering Regional Healthcare Access

Santa Clara county officials have successfully finalized the purchase of the Regional Medical Center in East San Jose, a move that has already led to the restoration of vital services and an expansion of the county’s hospital system. The acquisition, completed in April, ensures the continued availability of critical healthcare resources for residents across the county and the broader Bay Area.

The county hospital system, now strengthened by this acquisition, includes a Level 1 trauma and burn center. This facility is a critical lifeline,as it is one of only three such specialized centers located between Los Angeles and the Oregon border. Its presence is crucial for providing advanced care during emergencies, notably for burn victims, who would otherwise face considerably longer travel times to receive specialized treatment.

Darcie Green, director of Latinas Contra Cancer and a vocal advocate for uninsured patients, emphasized the interconnectedness of public health care. “When our public hospitals are underfunded, everyone suffers,” Green stated. “ER waits get longer, costs go up and care gets delayed for everyone regardless of where you get your care. We all have a stake in saving our public hospitals.” She urged community support for the board of supervisors’ exploration of a sales tax initiative, encouraging a unified campaign to ensure its success in the upcoming November elections.
