San Juan Shooting: Man Killed, Another Injured – Puerto Rico

A man was killed early Saturday morning in the San José neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Another man was wounded in the shooting.

Police responded to a call received through the 9-1-1 Emergency System reporting gunfire on Blanes Street at approximately 6:43 a.m., according to a police report. Upon arrival, officers found the body of a man with gunshot wounds. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

The injured man was transported by paramedics to a local hospital emergency room for treatment. His condition is currently unknown.

Agents from the San Juan Homicide Division and the on-duty prosecutor are investigating the incident. This killing, along with a double homicide reported the previous night in Yabucoa, brings the total number of homicides in Puerto Rico this year to 79.

The 9-1-1 Emergency System in Puerto Rico serves as the first point of contact for citizens reporting emergencies, channeling calls to state and municipal response agencies, according to the Negociado de Sistemas de Emergencias 9-1-1.

In San José, California, a 9-1-1 call for fire or medical assistance is initially connected to either the California Highway Patrol or the San José Police Department, depending on location, before being transferred to the San José Fire Department’s Fire Communications Center.

San José, California also offers a text-to-9-1-1 service for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, speech impaired, or experience unsafe speaking on the phone.
