San Juan: Major Fire Causes Millions in Losses at Eco San Juan S.A. Industrial Park
A large fire erupted Sunday evening at a warehouse belonging to Eco San Juan S.A. In the Chimbas Industrial Park, causing significant material damage estimated at 200 million pesos. Firefighters responded to the scene around 7:06 PM local time, encountering a rapidly spreading blaze fueled by chemicals and flammable materials stored within the facility.
Alex Muñoz, a 62-year-old resident of the province, was among the first to report the incident, telling authorities the fire originated in the company’s storage area. Despite initial attempts to contain the flames, the presence of hazardous materials quickly overwhelmed those efforts, allowing the fire to engulf a substantial portion of the warehouse, according to reports.
Fire crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent structures within the industrial park. While firefighters made progress in controlling the blaze, authorities indicated that extinguishing it completely would be a complex and potentially prolonged operation, requiring the deployment of generators to sustain operations through the night. As of Monday, the fire was not fully extinguished, with some hotspots remaining, according to municipal sources.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The extent of the damage includes severe structural damage to the warehouse and the complete destruction of machinery and stored supplies.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Ignacio Achem, a prosecutor with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, stated that a thorough investigation is underway, including forensic analysis, to determine the origin of the fire and has not ruled out the possibility of arson. “We are waiting for the police and forensic reports to move forward with the investigation,” Achem said, adding that it was too early to confirm any theories. The investigation will analyze all potential causes, according to officials.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents and workers in the industrial area, prompting authorities to evaluate preventative measures to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is awaiting the results of the forensic investigation to determine the next steps in the case.
