San Jose Man Identified as Victim in Fatal Golden Gate Bridge Fishing Boat Crash
Emergency Response and Rescue Operations in Marin County
Emergency crews from multiple jurisdictions responded at approximately 6:10 a.m. to reports of a vessel in distress beneath the north span of the Golden Gate Bridge within Marin County’s jurisdiction, as reported by the San Francisco Police Department. Coast Guard Station Golden Gate, the SFPD Real Time Investigation Center, the Southern Marin Fire District, the San Francisco Fire Department Marine Unit, and the Sausalito Fire Department’s Fire Boat Liberty, rushed to the scene.
Authorities located all three passengers in the water and administered immediate medical aid. The San Francisco Police Department’s marine unit subsequently transported the injured individuals to the Marin County shoreline for further treatment, according to fire officials. All three occupants were rushed to a local hospital suffering from critical injuries.
Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, one of the passengers succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office coroner division formally identified the deceased victim on Thursday afternoon as 35-year-old Daniel Zhengyu Qin of San Jose.
Darkness and Heavy Water Traffic Complicate Rescue Efforts
Investigators are still working to determine the exact sequence of events that caused the 25-foot vessel to strike the rocky shoreline. Environmental conditions during the early morning hours presented significant hurdles for first responders trying to locate the distressed boaters.
According to Richard Smith, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Golden Gate, darkness hampered visibility during the initial stages of the response. “Our crew members had a difficult time actually identifying them while they were in the water,” Smith stated, noting that responders had to deploy searchlights to spot the victims.
Smith described the tragedy as an unfortunate outcome where rescue personnel exhausted every resource given the difficult circumstances. Battalion Chief Jason Golden of the Southern Marin Fire District noted that the waterway was exceptionally busy at the time of the crash. “Traffic on the water this morning was very heavy with a lot of boats going out to fish,” Golden said. “Always important to know your surroundings, kind of set your course before you go out.”
Following the collision, a tugboat towed the damaged fishing vessel out of the San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco Police Department has taken the lead in investigating the exact cause of the crash.
Broader Maritime Safety Context in the San Francisco Bay
This incident marks the second fatal boating accident in the San Francisco Bay within a matter of months, though authorities emphasize that the events are unrelated. In July, a larger 49-foot vessel lost stability, was struck by a wave, and capsized near Alcatraz Island. That summer incident involved 20 people on board, resulting in three confirmed fatalities and one person remaining presumed dead.
As local law enforcement and federal maritime agencies continue their inquiries into the factors behind Thursday’s collision, the tragedy stands as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers facing mariners along the Northern California coast.
