San Francisco de Macorís Observes Days of Mourning for merengue Legend Henry Hierro
San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic – The municipality of San Francisco de Macorís has declared three days of official mourning – November 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2025 – following the death of celebrated Franco-Macorisan teacher and musician Henry Hierro. The declaration comes after Hierro passed away this morning, Monday, at 7:35 am, after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The decision was formalized through Resolution No. 14-225, approved during an unusual session of the municipal council held today. This act recognizes Hierro’s significant contributions too the cultural and artistic landscape of the city, and aims to honor a figure deeply respected for his dedication to the community. The mourning period serves as a collective expression of grief and remembrance for a man who left an indelible mark on San Francisco de Macorís.
During the days of mourning, the municipal flag will be flown at half-mast on all public buildings as a visible sign of respect and solidarity with Hierro’s family, friends, and the wider community. Councilors at the session lauded Hierro’s commitment to the city’s cultural, artistic, and social development, emphasizing his legacy as an example of community service.
Councilors also encouraged citizens to pay tribute to Hierro’s memory by reflecting on his work ethic, humility, and dedication to others. Hierro was a foundational figure in Dominican merengue, best known as the founder of the renowned orchestra, The Big Apple, where he excelled as a musician, arranger, producer, and singer.
