San Antonio Apartments: Cost of Living & Rent Guide | 2024

February 13, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A former motel near San Antonio International Airport is slated for conversion into affordable housing, a project intended to address the city’s growing need for lower-cost living options. The initiative, announced this week, will repurpose the existing structure rather than construct a new building, a strategy gaining traction as developers seek to reduce costs and accelerate project timelines.

The project comes as San Antonio grapples with a complex housing landscape. While some developments are moving forward, others are being revised to offer fewer affordable units. A separate housing project in the city recently saw its plans adjusted to include a reduced number of affordable apartments, according to reports. This shift underscores the challenges developers face in balancing affordability with economic viability.

The conversion of the airport-area motel is part of a broader effort to increase the availability of affordable housing throughout the city. City officials have not yet released specific details regarding the number of units the renovated motel will contain, or the income eligibility requirements for prospective tenants. Although, the project is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the supply of affordable options, particularly for individuals and families earning lower incomes.

Elsewhere in the San Antonio metropolitan area, a landmark tower is undergoing a similar transformation, being converted into apartments. This trend of repurposing existing structures highlights a growing recognition of the potential to address housing shortages through adaptive reuse. The San Antonio Tower project, like the motel conversion, aims to provide additional housing stock without requiring new construction.

Further north in Palo Alto, updated plans for a development at 788 San Antonio Road are also underway. While details of this project are distinct from the San Antonio initiatives, it reflects a regional focus on increasing housing density and addressing affordability concerns. The various projects collectively demonstrate a multifaceted approach to tackling the housing challenges facing communities across the region.

The city has not announced a timeline for the completion of the motel conversion, and further details are expected to be released in the coming weeks. The project’s success will likely depend on securing adequate funding and navigating the regulatory hurdles associated with repurposing an existing structure for residential utilize.
