Samsung Abandons Galaxy edge: Aspiring Design Fails to Capture Market
Samsung is reportedly discontinuing its Galaxy Edge line of smartphones after a mere five months on the market, marking a significant setback for the company’s attempt to redefine flagship design. Weak sales figures have forced a strategic reversal, signaling the end of an ambitious project.
Edge Underperforms Dramatically
Data from Newspim reveals a stark contrast in sales performance. While Samsung sold 1.31 million units of the Galaxy S25 Edge by August, its more conventional counterparts thrived: 8.25 million Galaxy S25 units, 5.05 million S25 Plus models, and a leading 12.18 million S25 ultra devices found buyers. This disparity points to consumer reluctance regarding the Edge’s price and specifications.
Price and Battery Life: A Fatal Combination?
Launched in May 2025, the Galaxy S25 Edge aimed to impress with its ultra-slim 5.8mm profile, a vibrant Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, a powerful snapdragon 8 elite processor, and 12GB of RAM. Though, its 3,900 mAh battery was perceived as insufficient for its $1,100 price tag – a sentiment echoed even in the Latvian market where the device retailed for a staggering 54,999 euros. Consumers demonstrably favored models offering superior battery life and overall performance.
Future Plans: The Plus Model Returns
Samsung has instructed employees to halt production of the S25 Edge once current inventory is depleted. The upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in January will showcase the S26, S26 Plus, and S26 Ultra. While a Galaxy S26 Edge isn’t entirely ruled out, the future of the Edge line appears sealed. Initially intended to become Samsung’s primary flagship series, the Edge’s fate was overturned by disappointing consumer demand. the S26 Plus is now slated for a comeback, effectively replacing the Edge in samsung’s product strategy.
As one source stated, “Until recently, Samsung defined thin smartphones as a ‘next-generation trend’ and even planned to make the Edge, rather than the Plus model, the flagship of the S26 series. Though, after the company reaffirmed limited consumer demand, it has reportedly decided to revive the plus model and eventually end production of the Edge series altogether.”
