Samsung and Google Raise Budget Phone Prices Due to RAM Crisis

Samsung and Google Raise Budget Phone Prices Due to RAM Crisis

October 2, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Samsung and Google are increasing starting prices across their budget smartphone lineups, with devices costing up to $100 more at retail due to ongoing component shortages. Engadget reported that the price adjustments impact multiple entry-level and mid-range devices from both manufacturers as the industry faces severe supply chain constraints.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Samsung raised prices across its entire Galaxy A series, with increases ranging from $30 to $70 per device.
  • Google increased the price of the Pixel 10a by $100, bringing its retail cost to $599.
  • The widespread price hikes are attributed to a persistent global RAM shortage impacting production costs.

Google and Samsung Raise Prices for Value Handsets

The price adjustments touch some of the most popular value-focused handsets on the market. According to 9to5Google, the Google Pixel 10a now costs $599, up from its March launch price of $499. MobileSyrup reported that the financial impact is even sharper for buyers in Canada, where the device launched at $679 and now retails for $849. Meanwhile, Android Authority noted that Samsung has implemented its second round of price hikes in a single week across the Galaxy A family. The Galaxy A17 5G climbed from $200 to $270 following an earlier adjustment in August. Additional Samsung models saw similar upward movement, with the Galaxy A27 5G moving from $350 to $380, the Galaxy A37 5G rising from $450 to $490, and the Galaxy A57 5G increasing from $550 to $600.

Global RAM Shortage Drives Hardware Costs Up

The hardware price hikes stem directly from a severe global RAM shortage that manufacturers have been unable to bypass. Industry projections indicate that supply chain pressures will likely dictate pricing for the next generation of budget devices as well. Under best-case scenarios, increased RAM manufacturing capacity in China could stabilize component prices within a year. However, more pessimistic forecasts suggest that elevated memory costs may persist through 2030, leaving consumers with fewer affordable options for new mobile hardware and pushing many buyers toward the used device market.
